Demoniseren

In zijn boek "De grote Amerika Show" stelt Tom-Jan Meeus dat beide partijen "het doen" (zie mijn vorige post). Volgens Meeus maken beide partijen zich schuldig aan ondemocratische tactieken, gebruiken ze populistische stijlmiddelen en spelen een cynisch spelletje met de kiezers.

Ik ben het daar niet mee eens: de polarisatie komt voornamelijk van de Republikeinen. Neem bijvoorbeeld dit recente optreden van de kersverse, Republikeinse presidentskandidaat Mitt Romney en zijn partijgenoot Paul Ryan:

"I think there is in this country a war on religion," Romney replied. "I think there is a desire to establish a religion in America known as secularism."

"They gave it a lot of thought and they decided to say that in this country that a church -- in this case, the Catholic Church -- would be required to violate its principles and its conscience and be required to provide contraceptives, sterilization and morning after pills to the employees of the church. ... We are now all Catholics. Those of us who are people of faith recognize this is -- an attack on one religion is an attack on all religion."
Het is zeker waar dat beide partijen op een cynische manier politiek bedrijven. Maar wat de Republikeinen hier doen gaat veel verder. Dit is demoniseren van de tegenstander. Ik daag de lezer uit om een tegenvoorbeeld te vinden op vergelijkbaar niveau als wat Mitt Romney en Paul Ryan hier laten zien.
